Philadelphia is home to many things, from diverse cultures and traditions to a variety of businesses and companies, some that are for profit, and others that are non-profit. Amongst this cluster of non-profit businesses, one has emerged, in recent years, to be different from the rest. It started out as a dream, and soon became a collaborative effort between a few people, to create a city with cars that are used in a commutative fashion, where no one person owns the car that they are driving
On Thursday January 10th, the Drexel Entrepreneurial Association hosted PhillyCarShare, one of Philadelphia’s most successful non-profit businesses, in their “Non-Profit: Business for Change” event, held at the Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship. The event featured PhillyCarShare co-founder, and current Deputy Executive Director, Clayton Lane, and Julie Robinson, the company’s Marketing Outreach Manager. Clayton Lane started out by a brief introduction to PhillyCarShare, and then opened the floor up for discussion and questions between him and those in attendance. In a matter of an hour, the students learned the true value of a non-profit, why they would even want to consider starting a non-profit company, and most of all, what the benefits non-profit companies have on society, as that is their main goal.
Afterwards, both Julie and Clayton stayed to network with students and enlighten them on opportunities within the Philadelphia Community, and how they can help further the goal of making Philadelphia a better city. PhillyCarShare was a tremendous start, but the students of Drexel are the future of Philadelphia.
The event truly brought out a unique demographic of students, ranging from Undergrad to Graduate and even staff members, as well as a variety of majors, including engineering, business administration, entrepreneurship, science, graphic design, photography, and more.
